Chain Bridge Fencing
The Restoration of the Union Chain Bridge
The Union Chain Bridge is a historic suspension bridge that spans the River Tweed between Horncliffe, Northumberland, England and Fishwick, Berwickshire, Scotland. It was built in 1820 and is the oldest surviving suspension bridge in Scotland.
The bridge was in need of restoration and in 2020, a £10.5 million project was launched to restore the bridge to its former glory. The project was led by Historic Environment Scotland (HES) and involved a team of engineers, architects, and craftsmen.
As part of the restoration project, new wooden fencing was installed around the bridge. The fence was designed and built by G Campbell & Son.
The restoration of the Union Chain Bridge was a major undertaking and it took over two years to complete. The bridge was reopened to the public in April 2023 and it is now a popular tourist destination. You can find out more about this beautiful bridge here.
How G Campbell & Son Carried Out the Wooden Fencing
G Campbell & Son is a family-owned and operated fencing contractor that has been in business for over 30 years. We have a team of experienced and skilled craftsmen who are experts in the construction of wooden fences.
We used a variety of traditional methods to construct the Post and Rail wooden fence around the Union Chain Bridge. The oak posts were hand-hewn and the rails were hand-cut.
We took great care to ensure that the fence was constructed to the highest standards. The fence is strong and durable and it is expected to last for many years to come.
We are proud to have played a role in the restoration of the Union Chain Bridge project. The bridge is a historic landmark and we are pleased to have helped to preserve it for future generations.
